The Denver Home and Garden Show was back, so that means, SWEET TIMES IN THE ROCKIES!!!!

Both Randy and I entered cakes again this year.

He made a 9 inch round tiled with little gum paste tiles to look like a fish.

I made a three tiered baby shower cake.  This allowed me to do a demo of a cake a friend wants for March.  Since the mom to be is having twins, the cake topper was 2 Peas in a Pod:

I thought I was entering it into the Celebration Cakes category so I thought it needed writing.  I put a little ribbon on the bottom that said “Surprise!  It’s Twins!!”

Here’s my final product:  DSCF0758sm

They ended up moving my cake to the tiered/stacked cake division instead of celebration cakes.

I learned a lot from making this and the judges gave good feedback….good color, cute topper, and things to improve:  irregular shaped borders and my leaves were too thick.  Good experience making these out of real cake, but I think next year I will be switching to styrofoam!

And of course, we can’t do anything without a little drama.  At the last minute Randy had to travel to Canada for work.  He’d be getting back the day before the cakes were due at the show.  Luckily he called the show coordinators and was able to move the drop off until Saturday morning.  Then after working on the cakes until midnight, dropping off the cakes, enjoying the home show with some friends, I managed to get food poisoning or a stomach bug.

Can’t wait until next year!  Still debating whether to go to the ICES convention in San Diego this summer…….
