Blogging from the plane – CT

June 17th, 2010 Randy No comments

Well, we’re off again, I think this is trip number seven. I’m almost tired of the plane. And as you know I’m not a fan of Chicago O’hare. But, we do have the option to finally do mobile boarding passes. Use them in California and Colorado so far. We still want to take puppy with us, but don’t know if she’ll fit under the seat.

Two car loads of recycling

November 7th, 2009 Randy No comments

One to Boulder – The “hard to recycle” center and a car load of wine bottles.  Sadie and I are now down to 1 TINY little bag of actual trash.  We recycle about twice as much as we throw away.  The homeowners fee goes to a company that takes most recycling.  We then have another bin of things we take to Westminster’s recycling.  they take 1-7 for plastics, so we take a lot there.  We also take ALL of the cardboard there.  We took a bunch of things to Boulder’s center.  Styrofoam, and I am taking the old garbage disposal motor there.  We feel pretty green right now.

Google TipJar

March 7th, 2009 Randy No comments

Cool website. It’s a collection of cool tips from money savings to eco / green stuff. Only thing is you can’t google the tip (which I have been doing a ton)

Things like:

“Make your own beer or wine. This is a great way to enjoy some of the beverages that you love at a very cheap price. You can easily make five gallons of beer or wine at once and it doesn’t take that long, either, once you have the basic ingredients.”
:)

“Get your books from the library. It’s hard to beat free.”

Recycling Wood

Put our remaindered wood from our deck on craigslist for someone to come pickup for free.  It was gone within 3 hours.  Cool.

Stinky composter

January 15th, 2009 Randy 2 comments

At first, the composter was smelling like yeasty bread, then it started to turn into something more stinky.  It also makes thumping noises, for the smell it needs to be in the gararge, but the noises make me hear weird things at night since we sleep above the garage.

Composter arrived!

January 9th, 2009 Randy No comments

The composted showed up.  Easy setup, we have to wait a week for it to get enough good stuff to start turning things into compost.  I’ll post more when we do.

Composter

January 6th, 2009 Randy No comments

We tried to buy this, but it looks like it didn’t take, no email, no charge on credit card.  Sent them an email, I hope they are still in business..    Sadie is WAY in for this.  We could be doing a lot more instead of throwing things out that could be composted.  I hope we get tons of good compost.  We are NOT going to keep it in the house, as lot of forums say this is stinky, contradicting the product notes.   We’ll post the procedure and thoughts on here..

Asphalt shingle recycling

January 6th, 2009 Randy No comments

Sadie found this place in Colorado that will take our shingles (if the roofing company allows it) where we would pay $7-9 a cubic yard for the disposal /recycling of the shingles instead of them going to the landfill.   We will probably have to pay for it.  But I’d rather pay then have them stuck in there, knowing I did it.  We are going to try and see how much they pay at the landfill for disposal, and see if they will match that and we’ll pay the difference.  We’ll see if we have to do that.

Computer Cord Recycling

July 6th, 2008 Randy No comments

So I have been bummed at something that I have done as well as probably a bunch of people.  I throw away computer cords.  At work, at home.  I recently put a stop to throwing these away at work.  We must recycle them.  I am thinking of purchasing a wire stripper.  There are TONS of things I don’t know how to do like:

  • What can be done about the insulation stripped? I’ve seen sites claim that they can be recycled, but how?
  • Are the wires from the telecom and computer industry viable to sell?  I’ve seen scrap yards say they only accept 12 guage or bigger.  Hmmm..
  • Am I going to make ANY money at this?
  • Is this going to be a business or am I just going to make a small difference in the world (still noble, but small)
  • Are there any regulations for me doing this?

Either way, I think I’ll start small and keep looking at how I am going to do this.  More to come…
